Default Freeze plug replacement

I have a 92 Olds. Cutlass supreme with a 3.1. It has a leaking freeze plug on the side of the engine that is against the firewall. I was wondering if I am able to at least get it out, is it safe to replace it with a rubber one. Thank you for any help.

You should be OK with a rubber one. The hardest part is getting to them. If you are friendly with a mechanic, see if he will give you any tips.
