Alero 2001 P0340 code

I looked at the 'codes' sticky and couldn't find P0340 but instead found P0341 camshaft sensor.

My Check engine light stays on for 24 hours then disappears, then will appear again after a day.

Autozone checked the code and printed it and it said P0340. Is it normal that the check engine comes on and off?. Could it be the sensor itself or the wires?

Where is the sensor located and what does it look like?

Thanks

Anyone?

PO340 is cam shaft positioning sensor. Its either the sensor itself or the wiring, or which you don't see very often the cogs on the cam shaft are full of **** so the sensor can't read the timing of the cam. My guess would be the sensor though.

Thanks Rusty, where it the sensor located and how much does it cost?

Is it easy to change?

I was looking at tthe engine block and there are a lot of wiring in the front of the block.

Thanks for your help :)

The 'Service Engine Soon' has been gone now for two full days which is strange since it would come on every other day.

The Alero does start a little rough though. Seems like it's going to stall but then starts.

Should I go ahead an change the sensor?

The sensor is under the power steering pump. You will have to take the serpentine belt off and remove the power steering pump. Disconect the wire from the sensor and take the 10mm bolt that holds it in out. I would spray some brake cleaner around the area so no dirt drops into the motor.

Those are probably gonna be the cheapest prices online.

Autozone has one for $36.99 too if you don't want to wait for shipping.
