Just bought a 2003 with a 3.4 liter with 54,000 miles.Runs fine but seems to get bad mileage at about 21 MPG. Our driving habits are we live in the country and have paved roads and drive at about 55 mph. Most trips are 10 miles. What should I get?

Check tire pressures. (I run 35psi cold)


Change air filter.


Change spark plugs.


Remove extra weight (don't carry junk around you don't need.)


I have a 2001 with the 3.4 and 96K miles, I get 27-28mpg all the time, and I drive 70mph a lot. Short trips are bad for mileage, mine are mostly 20 miles or more.

Im a GM technician and we recomend that every 30k miles do a fuel filter and throttlebody and injector service. Ive had lots of customers come back after that service and have have up to 8mpg! also helps with emissions.

have you looked into the fuelfilter, throttle body and injector service? one other things to keep an eye on is the intake manifold on this engine, they tend to leek coolant into the intake and that leads to coolant leaking into the oil. so keep an eye onthat. But to be 100% honest the v6 engines dont usually see more than 33mph. like i said i work on these cars all day so ive got some good knowledge on them. other things: try to keep the RPMS below 3k, if its an auto tranny and it has overdrive, turn it on above 45mph. try and use cruise control when you can it help keep the engine RPM smooth. one more question i have is what are your driving habbits in town and around?

AIR PRESSURE , AIR PRESSURE , AIR PRESSURE, CHECK YOUR TIRE AIR PRESSURE AT LEASE EVERY MONTH. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO PUSH A FLAT TIRE ACROSS THE PAVEMENT. YOUR ENGINE DOESNT LIKE TO PUSH IT EITHER. USE THE PRESCRIBED AIR PRESSURE BY GM.

I would recommend using SeaFoam, i noticed a big improvement in my mpg, probably about a 5-8mpg more difference.

I just started to change my driving habits and I have noticed around 4mpg gain. You see all of these people taking off like there at a race. I have found if I keep rpms under 3k I get a whole lot better gas mileage. With the way gas is going I would take the extra few minutes getting somewhere than paying almost 4 dollars a gallon. I almost drive like an old lady now. It makes the other people mad but Im saving money.

How important is it to use premium gas??

it is 100% pointless to use premium, only time you need it is if your car is turbo or superchearged or a high performance engine that has higher than 11:1 compression, other than that it is pointless to an everyday driver car. i can give you more spacifics on why you dont need need premium gas.
