Sorry I accidentally posted
this twice...

Hello all,

I bought a 99 Alero from an auction, didn't realize it at the time,
but the "service engine soon" light is on. The car runs great and I've
been driving with the Service Engine light on for about 5 months
now. I decided it was time to fix it.

I had my neighbor plug in his scanner and he pulled one code--> P1651

I looked it up online and got "Cooling Fan Relay 1",

I opened the Fuse/Relay flap under the hood and found something weird...

The
Relay was in the right place for "Cooling Fan Relay 1", but it had two
of the four connectors broken off of it, and a small wire had been fed
from it's terminal to another fuse terminal right above it. Part of the
plastic on that little wire looked as if it had melted a little.

-Why would someone do that? Was it a quick fix before the auction? or some kind of patch work?

-Is it safe for me to pull that wire (that doesn't naturally belong there) and replace the Relay?

I can email you a picture of the Relay box to see how this looks since it didn't allow me to upload the pic.

I fixed it, figure I post it just in case someone is searching and runs into the same problem.

I just pulled the wire out and replaced the relay, the fans kick in when the motor gets hot just like they should.

I'm thinking that someone rigged it during auction inspection to intentionally make the "Service Engine" light come on so no one else would bid on it, I just got lucky.

Well, thanks to all the people who at least thought about replying.
