No fuel pressure until cranking

Hello. A newbie to this forum. Daughter has a 99 Alero, 2.4 liter. She started complaining of hard starting which I confirmed as having to crank the engine a long time for it to start. Otherwise it runs great. Within the last year I did (stupidly) put in a cheap fuel pump module.

According to what I have read, the computer is supposed to energize the fuel pump relay for 2 seconds upon turning the key on without cranking the engine to build fuel pressure. Her's does not do this. No fuel pressure until the engine starts cranking. The fuel pump does run for 2 seconds after the engine is shut off like the manual says it should, I can hear it. But fuel pressure drops to nothing within a couple seconds after that.

Do I have 2 issues here? Bad fuel pump module for the pressure drop? And would it be a computer problem if the pump doesn't run until cranking? Thanks in advance to any suggestions.

I'd like to be of real help here, but know nothing of what you speak.

Having said that, in a very general sense, it sounds more like a fuel pump problem than a computer problem.

If it is a 99, it is OBDII compliant. Are you pulling any codes?
