1992 Ciera 3.3 V6 - Codes 21, 22, 29, 44

I'm working on this car this week and figured I'd throw this out to the forum in case anyone has some feedback. As I make headway, I'll post my results in hopes it helps someone else.

Symptoms - The car idles fine, but sputters with throttle and develops almost no power off-idle. Given time, it will gradually accelerate, but the transmission hunts up and down gears and it takes quite a while to get up to highway speed. If it can get up to about 75mph it will go into overdrive and hold speed, but If you have to slow down, it often falls all the way to 20mph before it can start accelerating again.

The engine light goes on and off (mostly on)

When I read the codes, I get:

21 - Throttle position sensor out of range/voltage high
22 - Throttle position sensor voltage low
29 - quad-driver circuit module/4th gear
44 - O2 Sensor - lean condition

I replaced the TPS today with no improvement. I tested the old sensor and it seems good. I also replaced the connector to the TPS since it was cracked. I've checked for vacuum leaks.

I'm taking a break from this car tomorrow, but will get back to it Monday. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

I seemed to have fixed this issue after a number of false starts.

I had replaced the TPS with no improvement, but I didn't fully calibrate it until a day later. That got rid of two of the engine codes, but it still ran like crap. I checked the fuel pressure and that was all good.

What seemed to fix it was taking apart the throttle body and cleaning it out really well. I removed the MAF sensor and sprayed it off with brake cleaner until it was all shiny. As soon as I reassembled everything, it ran like a champ.

Smooth idle, strong pull with no stumble or hesitation. No engine lights.

Calling it done!

Rick
