I bought a 70 olds cutlass convertible and when I hit the key it wont engage the starter, but when i crawl under the car and jump across the solenoid it will turn over...any ideas on what it could be, and how to check other things it could be?

Are you talking about the one that mounts at the bottom of the steering column?

Yes, could be worn connections.

I had a 67 Chevy pick up that had that problem, new switch fixed it.
