Hi all I recently purchased a 1987 Cutlass Ciera Cruiser Brougham in
excellent condition (except for a couple of things) it is black with
light brown interior it has the 3.8 and runs pretty good. The trans may
need some work and I think the fuel filter needs replacing but for two
grand I thought it was a good deal (even though that is over blue book
value) My friend had a 91 with the 3.3 and I did some work on it for
him, man these things are a breeze to work on. They didn't used to
sabatoge the do it yourselfer like they do nowadays. Under the hood on
the car is beautiful with the new hoses I put on it really looks brand
new. The car has 120k and I hope to get @ least 100k more. I would
like to maybe put an aftermarket air filter on it, any
recommendations? Does anyone know what other kind of performance enhancing parts will fit this thing?
Anyway I guess the plan is to hold on to this car for my kids to drive , if I can keep it running for that long. when that time rolls around it will be a classic

I have the same exact car. It has the 3.8 V6 with 69,000 miles. Mine is blue. There is one performance upgrade i know of and it is a computer chip upgrade. The only problem is that with a heavy foot, the engine starts to break down. Mine has a piston slap in the #6 cylinder. Too much abuse causes the wrist pin to oval out where it goes through the piston itself. But good luck, the engine, if it is kept maintain will perform well.

Did you add the chip to yours? Since I posted this the AC went out in the car, have you ever worked on one for this car?

drblksly Aug 22, 2007 10:44 PM

No, I didn't chip it because i didn't have the money. My AC went out in my car, it was an AC Compressor, which used is about $500. I got myAC fixed at a repair shop. Do you ever have a problem with the engine stalling when it is idling in gear, normally at a stop light or something?

Froggerspawn Aug 24, 2007 12:13 PM

No it doesnt stall but it idles real low occasionally, do you know where the pcv valve is located? 500 dollars wow where are you from I was hoping it would be cheaper than that. well fall is around the corner. When I first got it it would have issues starting up it would bottom out the rpms and shut off, it stopped that after a while though.Did you replace the compressor yourself?

$ 500 for a compressor , please man , shop , shop , shop . i recently replaced a compressor on my 97 gmc jimmy and my 94 ford f 150 , neither cost more than $ 250 bucks. YOU CAN ( OOPS FORGOT MY CAPS. ) BUY A COMPRESSOR AND CONDENSER MUCH CHEAPER THAN 5OO BUCKS. I AM CURRENTLY RECHARGING MY A/C EVERY 4 TO 5 WEEKS MYSELF AND I AM NOT ABOUT TO SPEND 500 BUCKS TO LET A MECHANIC RIP ME OFF . DO IT YOURSELF.
