I recently got an 88' Cutlass ciera 3.8L from a relative * My second ciera* I have put some work into it and it is ready for the road but when I ran it today for a final inspection I had heat for about 20 Mins. not very hot but enough to melt the ice on the windshield. but then it went cold on me. I have replaced the thermostat I put in a 180 deg instead of the 195 it calls for because it has so many miles on it ( somebody please tell me if I messed up with this? heard it from a friend who heard it from.... you know). Does the 88' have a heat control valve? I can't find it if it does. also the coolant was flushed and the proper levels are there.

Sounds Like you are on the right tracks. The 180 stat may cause a check engine light. As far as the heater controll valve you should be able to find it simply by following the heater hoses from the block to the core. if there is none it could be a problem with the vacuum operated doors in the ductwork.

Thanks for the input Otak I think the doors in the ducts work because i am getting flow and I can physically hear them move. I am going to dig for the control valve tomorrow. does this year even have one? I know my way around an engine and didn't see one I wonder if the previous owner before my uncle removed it? If they did it would seem to me that I would get heat to the core because there would be no restriction I ran the car for about 45 mins today and it only got colder.

IF THE MANUFACTURER OF AN AUTOMOBILE CALLS FOR A 195 THERMOSTADT, WHAT REASONING DO YOU HAVE TO CHANGE IT. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE AUTO HAS TESTED IT UNDER ANY CONDITION POSSIBLE. NEVER TRY TO OUTGUESS THE MFG. KEEP YOUR AUTO AS ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE. GOOD LUCK.
