Question about lock/key mechanism
#1
Hey guys... new to the forums.
I had a question regarding the locking mechanism on the driver side door of my '80 Cutlass Supreme. If this is in the wrong place... feel free to move it. This looked like the best place to me to post this...
Anyway, basically the driver-side lock is one step away from being completely screwed. Unlocking it with the key is so hard that I feel like I'm gonna snap my key off inside the door. Half the time I have to get in through the passenger side. I bought the car used about 4 months ago, and shortly after I did, I got new keys cut and got the guy at the dealership to spray something in there, not sure what it was. Wasn't WD40, it looked like some special lock-unsticker or something. Either way, that helped for a bit, but now it's back and it's worse. I've sprayed a touch of WD40 directly into the keyhole as well as up into the latch slot where the door meets the peg on the body of the car to try and help it. I've done this maybe 2 or 3 times over a one month period. It helps for a couple days, but it isn't a lasting solution.
I took a close look at the mechanism, and I noticed that, when compared to the passenger side, there's a specific piece of the mechanism that has way too much play in it. I'm not super-knowledgeable about cars, so I've no idea what it's called, but I took a picture of it.
The piece that the yellow arrow points to (not the latch, but that really grimy, dirty looking metal piece) has a lot of play in it. I can push it back and forth a bit. The one on the passenger side is rock solid, doesn't move at all, even if I push on it as hard as I can. When I use my key in the driver-side door, I can see this piece is moving with my key when I try and turn it. Is it possible that this thing is dislodged and preventing my key from turning properly?
Also, is there anything someone can recommend, or should I just take it into the dealership and have them do the work on the door?
