<DIV style="FONT-STYLE: italic">i have this problem with my 98 oldsmobile eighty eight
with a 3.8. when i go down the road my temp gauge reads 205, but when i stop for some amout of time like at a drive through it heats up to 240. I have flushed the antifreaze and cleaned it out with prestone radiator cleaner. I have changed the thermostat, i have put a block tester on it and found no head problems. the car blows hot air when i turn on the heater and no smoke comes out of the tailpipe. there is nowater in the oil or vise versa.i am just short of taking it to a gm dealer http://www.carforums.net/images/smilies/dunno.gif . can you help me?</DIV>

Sounds like you've been methodical to this point. Does it have electric fans? If so, are they coming on? I'd check the water pump next.

both fans come on and i have also shot the hoses with a heat gun and the fluid going in the engine is 195 and the fluid coming out of the block is 210. the fluid going into the block should be colder????

Pressure tester...heat gun...nice toys!

The temps seem reasonable. What does the heat gun read (top and bottom hoses) when it overheats?
