I have a 455 engine from a 1976 Olds 98 which I’m using in a “Special”. The engine hasn’t run since 1996 but I rebuilt it 4 years ago and am now ready to fire it up. However, when cranking the engine I don’t get any oil pressure.I’ve tried using an electric drill to spin the pump but still no pressure. When I say ‘no pressure’ there’s no sign of oil reaching the rockers and nothing reaching the gauge. I’m very reluctant to start the engine until I see signs of oil pressure when cranking it. The Chilton repair manual said to pack the pump with petroleum jelly so that's what I did when I rebuilt the engine. Was that right, or has the manual misled me? Anyway, what happens to the petroleum jelly when it leaves the pump?

Thanks for all the replies to my original posts (joke!). Sorry about it appearing twice. I got an error message and thought the first one hadn't worked. Anyway, here's an update following a chat with a very helpful mechanic used to working on these engines. As the oil pump is submergedit doesn't need filling with petroleum jelly. I removed as much of it as I could and now have oil pressure. Since the Chilton Repair Manual misled me on this, how many other things has it got wrong? It says the spark plug gap should be 80 thou. Is that correct? It says on the cover"World's Most Trusted Automotive Manual". ShouldI trust it? Just so you know exactly which book I'm referring to,it says Part no.7308 under the title, and Copyright 1990 inside.
