Hi guys I'm new here so please bare with me.
I have a 71 Olds Cutlass S with a 350. Question I'm torn between rebuilding engine was quoted about 1,800 from machine shop with street performance upgrades about 325- 350 hp. Not a lot but good for me I'm no street racer just want to enjoy my Cutty for years 2 come. Or do I purchase a crate engine long block about 400hp for 2,800.

Also any thoughts on dropping a SBC in. I'm asking case I've had a few people tell me that's the way to go, I'm not so sure about it, I like to keep my Oldsmobile, Oldsmobile nnot a cheap Chevy knock off any thoughts on this??

Keep it Olds! Anyone can have a Chevy.

I agree... keep it Olds. There are other things to consider by going Chevy. You need all of the other parts (distributor, brackets for alternator, PS pump, etc.) Not to mention your BOP trans will not bolt to a chevy block without an adaptor or you will need to find a Chevy trans.

If you trust the machine shop I would have them build the motor. I have a 70 cutlass with a 350. I just put in pistons that got me to about 10:01 compression. Had larger valve (Big Block Olds Valves if you will) put into my number 6 heads and a comp 268 cam. I run a set of headers and a performer RPM intake with a holley 600 vacuum secondary carb. I also installed a set of adjustable roller rockers. I don't know the exact HP, but the car performs really well on the street.

Rebuild yours, if your pulling the engine, then rebuilding yourself is easy, about 3-500$ in parts or less, no need for upgrades, car has plenty power stock.........why rebuild ? does it run ? smoke ? leak ? me '64 Cutlass Sport Coupe
