72 gutless cutless

Working on my son in laws 1972 350 gutless cutless. The previous owner took off or plugged off almost all of the vacuum lines on the engine along with smog controls. Would like to get it running for him. Need for now just to hook vacuum advance.Where is the correct location for the vacuum advance line from the carb to the distributor and correct timing and idle settings. No egr., fuel evaporate canister, nothing but PCV line and power brake booster. We just installed new plugs but it runs very hot. No temp gauges other than original idiot lights. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am having a similar situation (at least in terms of tuning and vacuum issues) on my 1971 Cutlass. I think the correct connection point for the vacuum advance line is on the front of the carb, on the drivers side right above the fuel mixture screw.

As for the tuning information, is it automatic and does it have A/C? If it is like mine, auto with no A/C, it should be 600 RPM in drive (800ish in park), 12 degrees BTDC at 1100 RPM (vacuum advance disconnected and plugged), 30 degree dwell angle, 0.016 point gap (if you still have points ignition system). I have read that running lean will cause it to run hot. If you have a vacuum gauge it is fairly easy to try to dial in the fuel mixture to try and help that.

The link below has the specific information if you have a 2 barrel carb or A/C or some other variation. Hopefully that is of some help.
