I have a 97 olds cutlass the anti theft system intermittently stalls me out. I don't have a chipped key. I have tried everything via google to start it, the relearn procedure which is the on position wait ten minutes etc. nothing works. I have also unhooked the batter and touched the positive and negative terminals together to discharge. Didn't work. This has happened before. There was an article via google search that said to turn the key to on position several times and the last time remove the key while in the on position and that worked. However there was a step I can't remember so I'm stuck. And can't find the article anymore. Anyone know what procedure I'm talking about?

 

I am just guessing here, but is not the anti-theft device a part of the ignition switch? If so, would it not be best to replace the ignition switch itself? I suspect the ignition switch is pretty generic to all cars in the GM line.
