Question Abs

Hi, Both my lights are on anti lock and brakes. I had a computer scan and they came up with two codes C1246 and C1286. The mechanic is telling me that I have to go to the dealer for this repair I live in Las Vegas. I do not trust the dealers out here, I have a 2000 Alero so far I have been driving without the ABS they told me it was ok to drive it like that and it would not harm my reg brakes are they right? Is it possible there is any kind of recall on this? I would appreciate hearing from other owners with the same problem.

Thanks
Gypsy
