I am having a problem with the headlights not turning off at night. Any suggestions?

They are supposed to be on at night.


I assume you mean they do not turn off after you shut the car off. How long do they stay on? There is a timer that should turn them off after about 3 minutes.

No, they do not shut off when the enginge is shut off. Not really sure how long they stay on but I thought it was supposed to only be about 20 seconds, according to the manual. Do you know if there is a way to disconnect the timer and do the on/off thing manually? Thanks for the reply.

If you have the factory radio, you may be able to change the time, or maybe have them off immediately. There are a number of setting options you can access through the factory radio for stuff like that.


I believe the time is counted in the BCM (Body Control Module, the computer), not a mechanical timer, so there is probably no way to change it by disconnecting something (unless you disconnect the battery).

Do you have any idea how the setting would be set through the radio?This is so baffling because I can not find where anyone has had this kind of problem. I suggested she set the emergency brake before putting it in park and shutting the engine off. I have read something in reference to this. The thing of it is, is that it only happens every so often. Thanks again for any information you have provided me with and I will keep searching. I have heard of the BCM and the dealership, where we took it to have it checked out,said this "could" be the problem at the cost of about $400 to replace. I would think in this computerized age there would be something that could be attached to the engine or whatever to locate this problem. I am so skeptical about this kind of stuff. Thanks again.

When the e-brake is on, the DRLs should be off. When the brake is released, the DRLs should come on.


It is possible that the BCM is the problem, but before doing anything expensive, I would time the lights and see just how long they stay on. Anything less than about 5 minutes should be no cause for alarm, unless you are having problems starting the car.


I was wrong about the settings being adjustable through the radio. I went and looked, and that feature was on my other car, sorry.


You are correct, the manual says 20 seconds. Are you leaving the light control in the Auto position? Are the interior lights staying on as well? If your car has fog lights, do they stay on also?


The dealer could scan the car, and if there is a trouble code stored, that would help narrow down the problem, but not every problem will generate a code. Dealers will usually charge about $80 for a scan, but Autozone will do it free.
