My 1994 Silhouette with the 3.8L engine and 180,000 miles has recently developed transmission "morning sickness," particularly in cold ambient temperatures and when the transmission has had sufficient time to cold soak.


The transmission will not immediately engage upon shifting into D or R. If I watch the tach, I can see the engine speed drop and the engine load and I can then drive off normally after less than 1/2 minute.


Trying to drive off immediately results in a jerk similar to the "neutral drops" I did as a kid (with long term disasterous results.)


The fluid had 30K miles on it, so I dropped the pan. The fluid was clear and red and had no smell. The pan and magnet were effectively clean. I split the filter and it was clean as well.


Changing the fluid has not helped. It still is a nuisance problem and it is "going away" with the advent of warmer weather; but in light of the mileage, I'm wondering is the trans bailing? Is there something simple and on-the-car that I should be investigating and remedying?


Any bright ideas out there on how to revive an old warrior that has served me well?

with the repairs you have made , sounds like the trans may be going south for the winter. one product i have used with amazing results is motor purr , available at some auto parts houses , i have used it several times on transmissions that appeared dead and then ran as much as another 100k miles. its cheap so what the heck try it. .....

That is an electronically controlled tranny, I'm pretty sure. There are 3 or 4 solenoids in there that are common problem areas. See if you can get a tranny shop to check them for you.

your trans shift solenoid is probably getting lazy and slow, with cold amient temps the fluid is thicker andmore difficult for the solenoid to operate correctly.180k...you have gotten your money out of it. New fluid will do nothing to this issue...if anything it will hurt it. New fluid is like a "shock" for any tranny with this mileage.
