I have a 86 cadillac with a olds 307 engine. the car set for 7 years and when the car started up it broke a push rod. i replaced the push rod but the broken piece is about 3 in long and is still in the vally in between the heads. will it hurt anything being down in there

You'd better pull the intake manifold to remove the broken pushrod.

If you can see it, you might want to remove pushrod again and try to insert a slender magnet down the hole and pull it out. Longshot though.. Otherwise pull intake as indicated. There is a chance it may stay where it is, but since engine will be trashed if it moves, I would not risk it.
