I'm dealing with a 79 350 Olds motor. It has alot ofmiles on it but runs real strong and had great oil pressure while crusing or under power, but started losing oil pressure at Idel when the motor is in gear, not a big surprise. I figured the old pump was weak and the pressure release spring in the pump was weak too. Someone had already installed one of those little plugs in the oil filter adapter to increase the oil pressure.

So, Iinstalled a new melling high volume pump. I primed it and started the motor. Oil pressure shot up to 50 psi or so for a second or two, and then started sinking down to zero. There isno knock in the motor while running. After about90 secondsof running there was no oil pressure. When to motor sets for a while, I can start it again and it will do the same thing. If I rev the motor slightly while the oil pressure is dropping, it drops even faster. (Already got a new gauge).

Now, I'm trying to figure out what would cause this. Could it be a bad new pump? (Hoping not, the motor is in an IROC camaro and a real pain to pull). Could the pressure increasing plug in the filter adapter be boosting the pressure too high and cause the pump to dump out the pressure release on the pump itself? If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
