Timing issue?

'72 olds cutlass with rocket 350

Am in the process of doing a cam swap & noticed when changing the timing gears that with #1 piston at the top & distributor pulled while pointing at #1 wire that the crank gear dot is at 12 & the camshaft gear dot is at 12 also, is this correct. If I rotate the engine until the marks line up at 12 & 6, the piston is also at the top, not sure where the dist. is pointing as it is pulled now, I suspect #6 wire maybe??

Just want to make sure my timing is correct. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Upon futher review online, I believe the situation is that with the marks both at 12 the motor is at compression stroke for #1 & is ready for the distributor to be installed to fire #1. If the marks are crank at 12 & cam at 6, this is easier to line up the marks & not be a tooth off but is compression stroke for #6 & is not ready for distributor to be installed.

Is this correct?
