WEAK Spark, WHY ??
I have a 1971 Olds Cutlass ragtop w/ Fresh 350 4 barrel. All stock except I installed a HEI Distributor. The "Resister Wire" from the firewall to dist has been Replaced with a 12 gauge wire. when I check for spark "at the plugs", it "Should be" a nice strong Blue/white SPARK, but it's not, it's a sort of yellow spark (kind of like a dieing flashlight). Even if I run a wire straight from the + on the battery to the distributor, same thing. I tried 2 different "New" (In Cap Coils). New wires, New Plugs (at .045"), Cap, Rotor. Multi Meter Reads 13 volts at the dist cap. ****What am I missing ??? **** Thank You

The voltage reading tells you nothing in terms of if the HEI can pull enough current to have its internal electronics work as they should.
there for my best guess is that even though you have a good positive connection the ground is not good. resistance wise you would want to read less then 1 ohm to ground. You jumped the positive to the battery, now do the ground. I have seen where since the motor was painted well the distributor hold down bolt was not grounding well to the block, but on the distributor flange it was. |
