I've got a strange problem. My son's 1998 Intrigue's battery gave up on us. I went and bought a new battery, installed it and everything was fine. Until...he noticed that his gas gauge no longer worked properly. The needle is now on the back side of the FULL peg and can't swing thru its arc to show the tank level. How could this have happened by disconnecting and reconnecting the terminals from a bad battery to a new one? Nothing else was touched or changed....And how do we go about fixing it? Thanks in advance for any advice......Dave

My son was able to fix it himself. He unscrewed the outer dash section, including the clear plastic that covers the gauges. Then he physically lifted the needle over the peg and its worked fine ever since. It happened to him a second time when he disconnected his battery for something and he was able to fix it the same way....except it was much quickeer the second time cause he knew where all the screws were.

thanks davcar for the great response!

i decided that taking the dash out was a little more work than i was willing to do...

so, i drilled a small hole through the face cover over the fuel gauge and used a wire to move the needle back over! works fine now, and if it happens again then i have the hole ready to fix the problem!

Thats really cool !!! So simple most including myself would look past that. I'll bet you didn't need much of a hole either...maybe 1/16?

I've learned the hard way (and try to put into practice) to have the mentality to always look at and check the simple things first when it comes to car problems. Its easy to think the worst and have visions of major problems and big $$ when something goes wrong and 95% of the time its something simple. The other 5%...well lets not talk about that.

The hole idea is as simple as it gets.

Well, You two certainly came up with a better soulution than GM

Thier trobleshooting guide in the factory manual says to replace the guage cluster--Yeech!-- After $77 for a hazzard switch last week, I can't even imagine what a guage cluster would cost.
