Default 72 cutlass

i have a 72 cutlass with a 350 rocket engine. I recently had the engine rebuilt to make it more powerful. runs great, but is sometimes is hard
to turnover. My mechanic thanks its the starter heating up on the headers. I put a heat blanket on the starter, and it still does it. He wants to put a mini starter on it. Any thoughts?

If in fact the problem is "the starter heating up on the headers," it would turn faster/normal on cold starts. Correct? Does it?

I would want to know the why behind the "hard to turnover" before throwing parts at it.
