Default Need clearance!

So I bought 17" rims that are wider than my stock ones. I believe they are 215/50/17. When I installed them on the front, the tire was rubbing against the shroud on the bottom of the coil. I've attached a picture showing where it was rubbing. I was thinking about getting 1/4" spacers to offset the wheels, but after reading about them and finding out they're illegal and unsafe, I've decided to look for a different way. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem? Maybe get performance struts and shocks that take up less space? 1" lift? At this point I'd rather not sell these rims to look for other ones, but if I can't figure something out I guess I have to.

The offset of the wheel is wrong or you need a smaller sidewall on the tires. Its probably the offset of the wheel though. A 1/4 inch space would be safe to run. I have never heard of them being illegal.

They are not legal for road use because you loose too much of the threads on the stud and the lug nut has a higher chance of falling off. They are not safe for the same reason.

Get the correct offset wheels and always test fit before you buy. Any shop you buy from will do it for free to make sure they don't have a comeback.

215/50/17 tires are not all that wide.

So we got 1/4" spacers and that provided just enough clearance all the way around. Got pics I'll put up later!

Well I talked to the guy about it and did some more research of my own. The only cases I've seen where lugs have broken were because of street racing and burn outs. They also went more than 1/4". I still have sufficient thread for the lug nuts, and the store I bought from hasn't had any problems with them and they've been selling a lot for several years. I believe them too, because there are a lot of donk cars around here and all of them have spacers or adaptors and haven't had any problems. Hoping for the best anyway! I'll let you guys know later if it was a bad idea. :P
