I have a 2001 Alero with the 3.4, and 89K miles. Overall, I like the car a lot, but there are a few things:

GM brake rotors tend to warp, even under normal useage. On my Impala and my previous Olds this was a problem, solved by going to aftermarket rotors. It hasn't shown up yet on my Alero.

The Passlock security system is a piece of junk after the ignition cylinder gets a little worn (around 75K miles usually) and will prevent you from starting your own car. Many people myself included have had this problem.

There have been a number of recalls, so I assume you've looked a Carfax report on your car.

Get some good performance tires, you will be much happier with the handling than with stock tires.

The 3.4 is a good engine overall. I get 27 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, and I don't baby it very much. Changing the back 3 spark plugs is a pain, but you don't have to do it very often.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it, but again overall, I like the Alero.
