This will be debated forever, but the facts are that premium gas usually has a different additive package than non-premium. However, in a well-maintained engine, you don't need the additional additives (which are there to help clean the engine of carbon deposits).


The only real reason to run premium is if your car requires a higher octane rating. This has nothing to do with fuel economy, and a higher octane fuel does not give more power or better mileage.


Octane isonly a measure of the fuel's resistance to knock (detonation) which can cause serious engine damage.
