What size engine do you have now and how many miles?

How long did the knocking last, or is it constant?

Did you put enough of the correct grade of oil back in? If the oil is low, your lifters will not inflate, causing knocking and rough running.

Did you spill any oil on any wiring or sensors?

You should always run the oil at the full mark, never overfull, but not at the 1/2 way point either. I'll have to check my owners manual, but isn't 5W30 the recommended oil for the 3.4?

The 3.4 is noted for piston slap, which could be the cause of your noise. This occurs when the engine is cold, and goes away when it gets warm (mostly goes away..). It is a common issue, and there really isn't a solution, but it shouldn't hurt your engine.

Running 10W30 is fine, its just a bit thicker. As for the piston slap I haven't heard of it as a common problem with the Alero's. I know that the rockers clatter a bit when the motor is cold though.
