I have a 03 Alero with the 2.2 engine,it has about 30,000 miles. The car used to stall for no reason but I believe this was a Passlock problem,I installed a module to bypass the security. My problem is that the engine will not go beyond 4000RPM,this was a problem before the module was put in.It feels like the rev limiter is coming on and the revs drop back to 3000RPM.This is under a no load condition, car is in park or nuetral. The only thing that comes to mind is that it could be an ignition module or spark plug. The fuel filter might need to be replaced but I think the engine is not leaning out, more like the opposite,[rich]

I don't think this is a problem, it's designed that way. Why are you needing to go beyond 3K in park or neutral? I think you're right, it's a rev limiter, designed to keep you from blowing it up.

The redline starts at 6200RPM so 4000 does seem low.I usually rev the engine to clean it out, this has been a quick way to clean the Oxygen sensor. As a check engine light is usally a O2 sensor going bad.I have reved the engine on my Ford and the check engine light turned OFF.My friend tried it on his Toyota and it worked.

More than likely it is the ignition switch which is loosing power or the signal, causing a stall.
