Retrofitting Grease Fittings-Front End

I've just bought a low mileage, 2001 Alero and intend on keeping it for the long haul (like maybe approaching 200 Kmi, if possible and lucky.)
I'm bummed that OEM Oldsmobile tie rod ends and ball joints do not have grease fittings. Although the owner's manual praises this as an elimnated maintenance event, my feeling is that I'm under the car draining the oil and changing the filter, shooting four grease fittings is no big deal.
Anyhow, the tie rod ends and ball joints have the bosses in the forgings for the fittings, just not drilled and tapped for the fittings. Has anyone had any experience adding grease fittings on these components in place? I don't want to have to wait for the first changeout.
I know-you generate chips, etc, but I've done this type of work before and know most (I think) of the tricks-greasing the bit, lots of magnet work, lots of blowing out chips, etc. But the big question-has anyone tried this, had success (or a disaster) and would like to share their experience?
Thanks.
Frank
