Default strange smoke from steering column

Hi

Alero year 2001. Sometimes smoke is seen near turn switch on steering wheel. It happens wher engine is switching on. Smoke is for a while once a month. No problem with engine starting. What it could be?

Regards, Marcin

Maybe there is a short in the multifunction switch (turn signals, headlights, wipers are controlled by this switch).
I would try removing the fuses for each of the items above, one at a time, until you don't see smoke anymore. That will help narrow down what system has a problem.
You need to find out the problem ASAP, since smoke soon turns into fire.
Let us know what you find.

The problem is that I can notice smoke once a month for a while 2-3 seconds. That's all.

Even though the smoke only happens for a few seconds, you will still see evidence of arcing or burned insulation. You need to get the cover off the steering column and take a look. I would also look under the dash, as the smoke may be travelling up the column before you see it.
