Rear Shock replacement

I have a 2003 Aurora for which I just purchsed AC Delco replacement shocks. Included in the kit along with new fittings to connect the air lines is a spring for the air drier. What''s this spring for and does it really need to be replaced. I can''t get my air drier apart.
