I have a 97' aurora

there are two buttons on the handle where you change from park to drive that say power transmission or normal, and traction control, what do they do?

I also have another problem, when i try to star the car it takes about 5sec to start, then a cloud of white smoke comes out the back.

I have a 01, so mine is slightly different, but traction is for traction control. You probably want to leave it on. It's basic fuction is to prevent you from skidding in wet or icy weather, by distributing power to differant tires according to its necesity. The power trans button I don't have on my 01 but I'm pretty sure its for electronic over drive. Normal is probably the overdrive function which will control the cars power and give better gas mileage, while Power will allow more power but engine will not be as frugal..

The button on the console beside the shifter is for turning the Traction Control off. If you turn it off it will reset to "ON" when restarted.

The button on the side of the shifter controls the type of shift the tranny does. In "Power" mode the tranny will shift quicker and harder than in the "Normal" mode. My local mechanic recommended leaving it in "Power" mode since it has less slippage when shifting and is actually better for the tranny.

Note: When in "Power" mode you can put the shifter in "1" (Low gear) and leave it there (momentarily) whilepressing and holdingthe accelerator petal to the floor. When the engine nears the "Red Line" the computer will shift the tranny and it will feel like it has a shift-kit in it!

BE SURE TO RETURN THE SHIFTER TO "D" WHEN YOU'RE DONE PLAYING OR IT WILL DOWNSHIFT WHEN YOUR SPEED DROPS BELOW THE SHIFTPOINTS.

I'm a 54 year old Grandpa and havebruised the pride ofseveral young boysby blowing the doors of their Mustang GTs with my 97 Aurora!
