Default 89 Supreme wont rev

My Son's 89 cutlass sat for a year. We got it back on the road a couple days ago. It ran fine for the 2 days.

But now it will only idle. It wont rev above about 1000rpm, then acts like there's not enough gas to go higher.

It never died, but it acts like it's only getting enough gas to idle, but no more.

I'm thinkin fuel filter since it sat for over a year - anyone concur?

Anyways, I want to start with the fuel filter since that's easiest. Can anybody tell me where it is on an 89 Cutlass Supreme?

Thanks, Bob

Well we went to pick up the car today from where we left it. It fired up and ran fine.........?????

So I didn't yet change the filter cos it's raining today. We just drove it home.

Has anybody had this happen?

Im still changing the filter though. But now it's a ticking time bomb. We don't whether the filter will fix it because we don't know if that was the problem in the first place.

Any input would be great.

Thanks, bob

Filter is a good place to start. I'm not sure where it is, but if you start at the gas tank and trace the line, it'll be easy to find, especially if you buy one first so you know what it looks like.

I did find a source that said most GMs have the filter below and behind the driver's seat.

He drove it to work and no problems so far.

Ok well now it's done it again. It seems we can drive it across town, but after around 10 miles it acts up.

If we leave it to cool off for a few hours and come back it runs just fine. It seems to be related to the engine being hot.

(And the fuel filter has been changed)

Any ideas whay makes it act up intermittently like that?

Chirp..chirp...
This is a hard one to diagnose for me anyway...have you had the fuel pressure checked at the fuel rail?

He was driving on the expressway and when he came over a overpass he naturally let off the gas because he was going down hill at that point. He said when he let off the gas the engine it started bucking violently.

I need a diagnostic jump key to see if the car can tell me anything.

And no, I haven't done any testing on anything. I'm to the point of just taking it somewhere to fix it.

OK i figured out hwo to jump connector A & B on the diagnostic lead under the wheel.

I get 3 12s in a row (which I read somewhere that means the car is telling me I am accessing the computer)

Next I get 3 33s in a row. I haven't been able to find the meaning of the "33" code yet.

Does anyone here know that?

well after resetting the ECM there are no codes reading. We even took it for a drive until it acted up again, and there are still no trouble codes reading.

We took the MAP sensor apart. No clogs or dirt particles anywhere, so we put it back together.

......HMMMM

It doesn't make sense that it would be a fuel pump. It runs fine for about 10 miles every time before it acts up.

There was pressure in the tank after only the short drive........

IDK???
