I've got a 90 Supreme SL I just bought... It keeps getting "air" in the fuel lines. The buddy I got this car from says its water in the gas tank that evaporates in the lines. But, the car was on E when I picked it up, and I put 6 gallons of gas in it. I'm thinking this could be the fuel filter. It runs okay at slightly higher speeds, around 35 and up, but below that it studders and doesn't want to get goign well. Any input here will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Oops forgot to mention, it is more less engine speed, not car speed, have to get it past 2500 RPM's to get it running smoothly when cold, after its been running a good bit, it mellows out to a studder instead of either stalling out or lacking most of its power. There is an audible miss to the engine when this happens. I'm stuck. MAP sensor, TPS, IAC, MAT, ect have been changed. Edited by: wikkedmagick45 |
Fuel filter, tank sock, dirty injectors, spark plugs, wires, coil...could be most anything. My suggestion is to first take it to Auto Zone and have them scan it for fault codes (they'll do it for free). See what comes up. C.J. |
I will do that... I discovered another problem. I got a coolant leak
somewhere. Never seen it on the pavement, and it is not in the oil. I drove to work this morning, did great. After work, it overheated right as I got off the highway. So I stopped at a business and checked the coolant, it accepted almost 2 more gallons of water. Where the hell is it going if it's not going in the block, nor leaking on the pavement? Beats me... |
THAT could be your problem...blown head gasket sucking the water down the cylinders. First priority is find and fix that problem and then see where you are. C.J. |
Upon further inspection today, i noticed the corner of the radiator is
rusted and it's leaking steadily from there. I can go about 40 miles before it starts to overheat. I put some BARS in it and it should be sealed, there wasn't a puddle starting under it when I got home tonight. I had my dad tell me it could either be the coils or the fuel pressure regulator also, so I'm going to try the regulator first and see what happens. Then I will add new coils anyway, just for the hell of it. |
Could this also be my coolant temp sender? My gauge works fine, but I
had a Grand Prix that ran like crap after it heated up and you shut it off, it was a pain to get it to start again, and when it did start it sounded like it was barely running. |
Do the free thing first and have it scanned. It maynot turn up anything, but then again you are just throwing money at it right now. Then I'd go with a fuel filter. JMHO. C.J. |
My fuel filter is brand new- found papers in the glove box for it.
AutoZone can only scan cars '96 and up with OBD II, which sucks. The gas tank, sending unit, and fuel pump is all brand new also I found out. I don't have a check engine light, so a scanner won't call back any codes anyhow. I am going to try the pressure regulator and coils, and will repost with the result. |
Just remember that if it was sucked down to the bottom of the tank, a lot of crud gets disturbed. Sounds like you got a plan, so good luck. C.J. |
I am not totally positive that my ideas will work, but it's worth a shot. My dad works for an auto shop, so I can get anything used for next to nothing. Hopefully something turns up. If not, I will turn back here for help.

Have officially turned up the results... My fuel pump is carrying ten pounds of pressure, so I got to change it.
