Default Hotwire fuel pump

I am trying to pump the gas out of the tank on my '95 Cutlass Ciera. I removed the fuel line going to the engine and placed it in my gas can, and then tried just turning on the key- the car apparently knows better because the pump didn't kick in. Then I crawled underneath and unplugged what I believe is the wiring harness to the pump. It consists of a flat plug with 4 wires, black, gray, some sort of light purple, and a heavier gauge black. I tried various combinations, using the blacks as ground and applying power to the other two, but still no pump action. Before I continue to apply electricity to various parts of a tank full of gas, I think I should ask for advice

How do I get that pump to turn on?

Default Hotwire fuel pump

Well im having problems with my blazer not running too well and the fuel pump in it is from a salvage yard when i first got it. The fuel gauge only works half way, when its full its all the way up and when its empty it looks like a half tank when it really isnt, would that be the sending unit or is there another problem it could be?
