If the new crank sensor does not look like the old one, it should not have been installed. Perhaps try to swap sensors at the parts store. Make sure you take your old one with you. For clarification, you did check continuity on the sensor, not the wires, right? What was the resistance? How many wires does it have? This sensor should have an air gap with a measurable clearance, check that too.
