Default Original price of an 1972 Cutlass

The rules for registering an automobile older than 35 years in Denmark, where I am, is 40% of the original value of the car, when it was made. I'm pretty sure there wasn't even a market for Oldsmobiles in Denmark in 1972, so I'm looking for an estimated price in 1972, in the US. I'll have better specifications on which model, engine size, etc. soon.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You probably have a range of $3,600 - $5,500 depending on options.

Do you have a source for that? I'm split between providing some kind of tangible proof, or the motor office making guesstimates. Not doubting you, since it sounds about right.

This website says the MSRP is/was $2,973 - is that without taxes or something?

That just seems low. I have the window sticker from my 1970 Cutlass S and it most definatly was not "fully loaded". The sticker says $3,960 with the options on it. That's a 350 2bbl, TH350 trans, 2.56 rear end with posi, power trunk release, interior lighting, trunk light, A/C and "sport steering wheel". That's not the 4 spoke that everone wants though. It was even a drum brake car and AM radio.

And if you look when you add options it does nothing the the base original MSRP on that site. Options play a HUGE part in the cost of the car.

Good point, hadn't noticed that. I guess I'll input my specs once I've looked at the car in question and figure something out.

Thanks for the help so far.

I had a look at it today, it's a 72 Cutlass of some kind, not sure which. Has twin exhausts of some kind, a 350 and a 3 speed automatic, AC at one point, normal hood, had a canvas(?) cover on the hardtop at one point which is long gone. Two doors, the divider between front and rear side windows is just a small chrome strip. C|S emblem on the side of the hardtop/coupe. No other distinguishing features I can think of - forgot to find the VIN, of course. >.>

Does the C|S mean it's a special model?

It's just a Cutlass S. They sort of made a combined emblem for it. The roof have a vinyl top. They go bad (and to hell) in short order. It's really not that uncommon to see them torn up or missing.

If you can get a look at the pad just below #1 spark plug there will be numbers there. If they read something like 32m135621 (M being the plant where it was made and the last six matching the last 6 of the VIN) you can verify if it's the orginal engine in the car.
