1997 Cutlass transmission noise

I have a 1997 cutlass that just started having a whining noise in the transmission or differential. The noise sounds exactly like an old truck with a loud differential.... anyone have a clue how to quiten the noise without having to totally replace the transmission? Edited by: Randyj

Nope...definitely not an axle or a hub bearing although the whining noise does not change pitch when shifting gears.
