I just bought a 73 olds 88 R, I't got the same problem, however it stalls and dies out on level ground and hills wheni drive it over 45mph(hills I can drive 15-20), thinking it got some sh*t ingastank. does any one know if it got a filter in the tank?, I know there is one in the carb.

There is probably a screen on the end of the pickup tube, not necessarily a filter, its job is to keep larger debris from getting in the line. If the car has the original tank, or has been sitting a long time, it maybe worth a look. Sounds like an obstruction to me. Does the car have a cat converter?

Could be the tank sock...could also be the front fuel filter, carb (float too high or low, sticky accellerator pump, clogged jets), fuel pump, or a host of other things....including a blown head gasket.
Start simple and work your way up.

took the tank of and found a very dirty filter. cleaned it with air the "wrong way" in gasoline. hosed the tank(filthy)worked pretty good, pump is new, seem to be a healty amount coming out from the pump.carbfilter is new. Still stallinglike it used to. However, when I open the fuelline from the pump to the carb. it have no gas in it. is it a sign?after shutting of the engine, thereis agood amount of gas whenI pull the throttle. same when itdies out.

just to say thanks and the solution to my stalling problems....
I took of the tank once again to recheck the filter, The problem all along probobly was the filter getting sucked into the gas inlet tube not alowing enough fuel to pass through having only a circle3/8" of filter. solution: remove filter, and insert a new filter inside the engine compartment before the pump, alowingeasy change and inspection.
