While driving, the trac control will suddenly pop off and the TRAC off light and check engine light comes on. The manual says to shut the car off and restart it. This works but this is happening several times a day now and last night the check engine symbol came on and stayed on. Anyone else have this problem and know what it is?

I'm not sure about the Intrigue but I know when this happens in the Alero its the sign of a bad wheel bearing. If you here in the states you can go to an Autozone to get the codes read. If no codes come up on their scanner I am willing to say I'm 99% sure its a wheel bearing. Average code readers wont read read ABS codes, which is what a bad wheel bearing code would be.
