Default Bravada steering

I bought a '97 Bravada about 2 months ago that has some issues, but nothing I didn't know about from the beginning.
My question is about steering rather than suspension, but it may be related,I don't know.
Think about a TV show with someone pretending to drive a car.And they're constantly moving the wheel back and forth a bit to look like they're doing something.Going straight, that's exactly what I have to do with mine for real. It's like there's a lot of free play in the wheel,or in the steering, and I'm constantly correcting a little bit, back and forth.
I haven't gotten into this, but what do you think the most likely causes would be?Play in the "knuckle" just before the shaft goes into the gearbox?Gearbox itself?Anything?
I'd appreciate any suggestions,I'd like to narrow down the possibilities before I get on the ground.
Thanks.

I'd look at tie rods first, then start looking for something loose after that. Don't overlook ball joints and just plain funky tire wear as well.
