Alero Intermittent Start
#1
I''ve got a question on the 2001 Olds Alero. It is the V6 model.
Last Friday (10/17/2008) I drove it to work without a problem. When I went to lunch, it would not start. It was trying to turn over, but would never actually start. I came back in and got onto this site and found out about the security system issues (turn key "ON" for 10 minutes until security light goes out and turn off the try to start). That worked great! At the end of the day I drove home without any problems. I started it up without any problems over the weekend without any problems. On Monday (10/20/2008) morning when I started it to go to work it wouldn''t start. This time, it wasn''t even trying to turn over. I tried this several times and then just took another vehicle to work. My dad came over at about 10am and it wouldn''t start for him either. He wiggled the gear selector and then it started without any problem. It worked fine all day and night. Then again this morning the same thing happened. Except I was able to get it started on the third try (after wiggling the gear selector). Is there some type of switch that can cause this? Has anybody see this before? PLEASE HELP!

There is a lockout switch that prevents the car from starting if the gear shift is not in park. I would start by checking that.
If you had a security lightflashing during the start attempts, you may have a passlock problem. See the thread titled "A fix for Passlock problems" for more info on that.
