Default Help with installing purge solenoid

I just got a new purge solenoid for my 1999 Alero 3.4, as I have the P0440 error code. It was no problem to install, except for one thing. I'm wondering if the rubber hoses going into the solenoid were switched, either when the car was worked on previously, or when I installed the solenoid. As it is now, the bottom hose goes to the PCV valve, and the top hose goes to the evap canister (or where ever it goes to the rear of the car). However, from what little info I've been able to find, it appears that these hoses are switched. Does anyone know the correct way to install the hoses?

I also need to replace the hose mentioned above, as the end has a long crack, which may be causing my SES light.

Not sure of the correct positioning, but the crack will allow air to leak into the system, most likely causing your SES.

Well, I switched the lines around, and disconnected the battery last Thursday night. No SES light since then, and the car has been running fine. (Except now the transmission seems to be getting feisty.)
