1969 Cutlass S

My fuel tank vent started leaking gas everywhere yesterday from the vent.Since there was just an open line with the goofy plastic empty vent on the end, I took off the plastic peice and capped off the line. The vent peice is just an empty shell, so I am not sure if it is supposed to have more to it, or if it supposed to be connected to something else. I am not sure its a good idea if it allows the tank to be fully open anyway. I figured on replacing the gas cap with with a vented one, but did not find one at the parts store. Is there any harm in this, should I replace the fuel tank vent, is it really even necessary? Any ideas? Thanks

If you don't have atank vent, your car will "run out of gas" since the fuel pump will form a vacuum in the tank. It won't collapse or anything...but it'll kill performance before it dies completely. Check Year One or Fusicks for the vent. They're cheap and work!
