I'm working on a 1963 Starfire with a 394c.i. "ultra-high compression" engine. The engine seems to have a split personality. Sometimes it runs like ten men, other times it won't even start. When cranking, it backfires out both sides of the dual exhaust, sounds like it's just about to start up and then continues to crank and crank. It doesn't seem to matter whether the engine is cold or warm, it remains inconsistent. The plugs, points, condenser, rotor and cap have been changed twice. The 4GV carb has been rebuilt. As part of my troubleshooting/repair procedure I want to time the car. I'm unable to find any timing marks on the engine itself. The harmonic balancer has a groove in two places, each 180-degrees apart. How do you set the timing on this engine?!?! Edited by: 63starfire
